Lightening eve. ବିଜୁଳୀ କନ୍ୟା

Date 27-03-2014               Lightening eve.  ବିଜୁଳୀ କନ୍ୟା
In memory of the missing numbers of fairer sex.
In the year 2008 in the annual conference of gynaecologists in Delhi,  chief guest, the CM,  Smt Shiela Dixit announced  one lakh fund to girl child at birth to encourage parents.
The driver of the taxi I used for four days there, was a Sikh, Mr Sukhvinder at his approaching forty, who was still a bachelor as I enquired. Why man? His answer was worrisome, touched me and pinched my thinking.
He was not getting a match in Delhi; in straight term he replied there are not enough girls in Delhi. He too had no hope to get one from Punjab. No one in Punjab believed a Sikh taxi driver in Delhi had his own house in a posh area, to come forward to give her daughter`s hand at a distant place.
I did not like to further demoralize him by informing, the situation of Punjab was nothing better.
He had the information that there was hope to find his bride from Kerala, Hindu or Muslim or Christian anyone was acceptable to him. I learnt, "A desperate person is truly secular".
I never experienced the reality of many seminar discussions of missing girls till I met this forced bachelor. I imagined he was not alone there must be thousands of Sukhvinders longing for the SUKH and company of a female friend from which the society deprived him, particularly gynaecologists.
I felt lucky that I did not wait to this crisis period and instead choose my company long before the first USG machine was brought to Odisha  by Dr Meher and Dr Agrawal of beam diagnostic Cuttack.( I assure my readers, these two gentlemen never did wrong practice, they are mentioned here to be honoured)
Once I asked a lawmaker friend, how the peasant family was able to know who the criminal doctor of a nearby district might do the sex determination but the SP, COLLECTOR OR CDMO were not aware of it.
He replied, law needs a complaint from a person to initiate investigation(not always). Who then should complain when the chief protector father (not the unfortunate mother) was the chief of crime and the person who sold himself to carry out the proceeding was none other than the image of God in common people`s mind? Thy name is Doctor.
Father is God, Doctor is also God but unfortunately partners of crime.
2008/2009 In my work place at Sukinda Jajpur, I asked a lab technician about a patient's well being, who was not seen for last 2 months and whose husband had prior closeness to me. He is a learned man, did several elite discussion on various issues hence I remembered. By that time her pregnancy should have crossed 28 weeks (7 months). They had taken one or two tetanus toxoid vaccine from government facility.
I was shocked to know that pregnancy was a history by that time. Knowing full well I was not the person going to solve his (not their) purpose he went to any other place did a sex determination and it became a lightening eve.
I was extremely disturbed for several days, should I lodge a complaint, Was it good to act on hearsay, this might be wrong how such a social thinker could do it, whether medical ethics allowed me to act on confidential professional information, how to face the aftermath, could it be proved, was I not going to feed the administration and media by throwing a prey for them, as usual all these thought prevailed over my basic conscience as a civilized human being and I remained silent. I was aware of the fact that a doctor might not take the plea of professional secrecy while hiding a crime, but a doctor in no way would investigate a matter for how far it was true, how could he be a police or a detective. These were all excuses for me; reality was, 'there is no proper forum where this can be ventilated'.
Where they did the crime, might be a clinic named jivandhara or amrit, or life care or even feminine wellbeing anything we imagine, after all the clinical establishment deals with the life divine.
It was possible to expose the crime. 1-They cannot deny pregnancy as it was in my record as well as in the government immunization register, 2-They cannot claim it was a spontaneous miscarries as in such a case at such advanced gestational age they cannot deal it at home and if they claimed so it would not be believed by law, considering their educational status.3-they can never produce a medical certificate as definitely no clinic must have registered its own crime, 4-they cannot claim that it was a defective baby as they have to produce evidence in favor. I was thinking all these angles but our law in this regard is very weak, a nasty joke to the lightening eves and the forced bachelor of Delhi Mr Sukhvinder the taxi driver for whom there is no bride even if he owns a house in a posh area of the capital.
What joke?
To control bank robbery parliament passes a law like this, 1-Anyone who wished to loot a bank ,private or public sector should first come to the bank, give a pose in front of CCTV camera, 2-Should sign a register, 3-Should give a photo identity card, 4-The bank manager should submit the filled up Form F/R online, 5-He should declare that while doing transaction the visitor was not helped for bank robbery.
How is this? Is it not a joke? Suppose the bank manager and the robber join hand together what is the status of this law?
Pre Conceptional and Pre Natal Diagnostic Test (PCPNDT) law to control sex determination and sex selective termination of pregnancy even with its 2004 amendment is exactly like that. Any USG clinic or Genetic and related clinic is bound to register before purchase of equipments, this is the only good part of the law. Yes like any other license and registration process in govt machinery, I say it has to be done to keep all such clinics under supervision of law. However I feel that the procedure followed is same as the above bank robbery description. We all follow the law and anyone who comes for genuine work has no problem in abiding it even if it consumes time. But when the party and the doctor have odd reasons they maintain no formality and THY SEES THE FORBIDDEN AND IF AN EVE IS IN, THY DOCTOR`S HAND OF GOD KILLS IT.
Come do it and vanish with no record, is the modus operandi. There is no software to record every new touch of skin of the patient, or retrieve the total scan video without delete. Yes we can and should expose it by sting operation, we doctors are dealing with plenty of human beings and at least for me I can very well guess a sting operation, I shall like one against my clinic to prove me innocent.
Once in a TV debate an administrator was supporting these operation which was opposed by a doctor friend, yes debates should be there for public awareness. That is the only option.
Before suggesting a proper law let me share how I deal with the couple who request me to know the sex. I am happy to say most of my patients are tribes people, and Kudumi Mohantas who have no sex preference, they are nice to both sexes they are far better than so called developed people. When someone insists my reply mostly depends on mood and the person’s level of understanding. Like 1- I am a doctor your family is not mine , the whole country is my family and in it I shall bless you have one which is less in number in the society, 2-Do you want to go to the jail?  Collector sir has installed an online recorder what we are talking is directly heard in his office, 3-See my assisting staff and the other lady in the counter both have 2 daughters each , how do you expect I shall tell you? 4-Harshly tell to the educated one, YOU people are criminals you can kill your own baby then there is every possibility you can kill me tomorrow if you do not like me. And so on.
My suggestion is 180 degree reverse, A-) I think all pregnancies should be registered at confirmation by the birth registrar without waiting delivery, and it should be tracked (the process is now followed for immunization purpose.) All beneficial schemes should be generated after that. B-) anyone who did a late registration should give explanation for the delay and should be looked with suspicion. C-)All pregnancies should undergo a scan at 18 to 20 weeks to know the anomaly AND SEX SHOULD be recorded and notified to the society, this will help to follow what happened next and all event such as a pregancy loss is to be registered. ACTUALLY THIS WILL FORCE THE DOCTOR TO BE MORE SKILLFUL, in a twin pregnancy it has important diagnostic value, in some genetic diseases it is helpful to know the sex, I know many people will come with swords for this radical idea, some may even charge this man wants more income from USG clinic, and  so on.
We are talking about a crisis not a natural problem, more dangerous than we imagine, it should be tackled like a war situation.
In a Bhadrak seminar an eminent local doctor shamelessly supported the desperate couple who prefer a male baby to which another replied “What you are talking is sufficient to put you behind bar”.
Business is of millions and it is a risk to talk against,  a worthy risk to take for yours and mine sons who may not get a bride like the Sukhvinder taxi driver who owns a house in a posh area of Delhi but unable to find a match up to his forty. More importantly for your grand daughters who are not safe with plenty of forced bachelors in the society.
  conclusion.
About sex selective termination of pregnancy, many eminent people are sympathetic to the family who does it, they feel it may be a social evil but for a couple when they do not need one , should get permission to do this otherwise an unwanted baby destined to be discriminated if is allowed to arrive. They do not think, not wanting a female who in fact is more welcome itself is a defective mindset needing correction and counseling.
Once an authority inspecting the USG clinic where I work was tried to be impressed by me delivering my views against sex determination etc, he was not at all impressed rather did a debate against it.  How should I counter my boss who can just do a red mark against the clinic.
The same man in next USG workshop countered my appeal to USG owners not to do the crime , my concern was for one who rarely started doing it. Hoped the man present got the message, but again the owner may be innocent and the consulting doctor is the culprit. I am sure my appeal worked. So let people tell whatever they wish, one has to raise the voice.
It is not difficult to know the culprits, mother of a male fetus do not hesitate to reveal the clinic as she feels the charge the clinic took was abnormally high so should be exposed, she also sense a feeling of pride to revel, in her womb grows the scion. The prince in womb in future may be as unfortunate as Sukhvinder of Delhi.
Can I tell the authority what he told is sufficient to put himself behind the bar. It is the mind set not the law that can help.
Once a patient came in a bleeding condition who was advised an abortifacient  to be used at bedtime and report next morning to her doctor, but it acted soon and the fetus expelled to their horror was of their desired sex , The condition of them was such depressing that I had to console them without being angry.  One delivered a female baby but she knew it to be male, that couple was nice and felt God changed the sex afterward. They loved their third daughter. But sometimes these people do not believe the hospital staff and claim their baby is changed and war starts.
The most horrible experience .. Once an educated higher status pregnant mother pointed a particular highly respected doctor determined the sex of her fetus on enough payment. I never believed such a strong feminist, sensitive literary person could do it.
I felt too hurt but I consoled, I heard wrong.
To conclude I pray God to save the grand daughters of that authority and that Doctor from the clutch of the adverse sex ratio.
LIGHTENING EVE WHILE RELEASED FROM KING KANSA`S HAND DECLARED WHERE LORD SHREE KRISHNA WAS GROWING but these eves?? Can they fight back, ask Sukhvinder the Sikh taxi driver who owns a house in a posh area of Delhi but does not find a bride up to his forties.

DEDICATED TO SUKHVINDER.

A year as a blogger. 15th June 2014 - 14th June 2015.

A year as a blogger.

On 15th June 2014, being inspired by my friends particularly Dr Subrat Mishra and by repeated reminders from my two sons that facebook is not the right place to write long articles I started my blog. My younger son created this for me.
I am happy that it failed to complete a half century of articles only by four stories. This included almost fifty percent as short stories equally divided in English and Odia. The other fifty percent mixes up memoirs as Annyatha Mulyaheena (otherwise worthless), some essays, a year review, a travelogue, two film reviews like PK and India`s daughter and on some issues .
I never claim me as a good writer but now feel comfort to identify me as a bilingual writer. This is my gain in the year which I was hesitant to call me before. Anybody speaking is not an orator, any one writing a story is not a story teller. I felt I am able to narrate a story which is all about me as I pen.
My poet son Sayam Suraj rightly says, “Papa your vocabulary is limited, your grammar is too erroneous but still you manage to express yourself complete with readable narrative though sometimes it becomes a little lacking in clarity. If you can be a bit more careful to edit then it will be far better.”
An expert in English language a friend Mr Ashok Moharana says that I progress in a good manner to finish it in a hurry as if I have to attend my patient.
Amazingly true both of the above two critics are.
Yes my language skill is really rudimentary and my time constrain is so much that the essay, ‘Walky Talky’ was written as I was walking and that is not the only of its kind.
I  am trying to work on both these issues in next five years to be a real good writer.
Why then I should write now?
I believe swimming can never be learnt without jumping to water. A passionate writer can never stop himself writing anything by differing it. The third and most important thing is that if an illiterate old man or woman can so beautifully entertain the grandchildren with range of stories why not a literate man lacking fine language skill cannot do it?
So I cannot and need not stop writing.
Does anyone read it?
Of course people are reading. I got more than 3700 readers in last year, which means every day I am connected to 10 people. I am not a Chetan Bhagat that I know and ten is enough to do a discussion. This makes my average reader per post is 75. I am quite happy with that. My story “Fall of Sunajhari “ is already read by 200 readers. Is it not good for an unknown writer?
It is my observation that UK people except my friend Dr Surajit Sinha never read me. May be the English language of mine is not acceptable to them. After India most of my readers are from USA. That is again understandable as many friends are there. It gives a lot of pleasure to see some of my readers are from Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Switzerland, and some other countries where no known person is staying. Through this article I want to thank these unknown friends as well as my known friends. One more observation is that my profile is viewed by more than 10000 viewers and I do not know why this is more than page views.
I am not shy to share my small pleasure with my esteemed readers that compelled me to write this.
Finally I want to tell what this 14th and 15th of June means to an Odia in the eastern state of India. The summer ends on 14th June in Odisha on the last day of the month of JESTHA (the eldest month ) as the monsoon clouds with breezing showers reach the land on this day or next day which is the first day of month of ASHADHA . With this the rainy season starts the earth prepares it for the next crop. We celebrate it with a grand festival called Raja that means gain of fertility of a lady and here the lady is none other than mother earth to be fertile with monsoon. Dramatic event, as the maximum temperature suddenly drops from more than 45 degree Celsius to about 30 degree Celsius within a single day even.

Wish everyone who knows RAJA a very happy festival and the farmers of my land a very good monsoon with rich harvest. Thank you all my readers.

(Dedicate this post to the two bloggers of Bangladesh and one social media activist of UP who were killed for their pen.)

Memoir of Sunari Sikuan, a village in Khariar block of Nuapada district. IN ANNYATHA MULYAHEENA (Otherwise worthless)

Memoir of Sunari Sikuan, a village in Khariar block of Nuapada district.
IN ANNYATHA MULYAHEENA (Otherwise worthless)

Prologue- So far I wrote about my childhood memoir not in a chronological order but as flashes that touched me. I felt these are otherwise worthless events in my life. I didn’t plan to write my adult memoir with the same title as I never felt I am living a worthless life as a state government servant in Odisha Medical Services in periphery cadre. I am not a corrupt and capable man to design my posting. But by grace of God where ever I worked I loved to do my work and more importantly people loved me. I worked in Nuapada district three months before its formation out of undivided Kalahandi district in 1993 first of April, 13 months at Budhikomna and about six years at Raj Khariar, the head quarter of one of the important princely state of pre independent Odisha ruled by the Singhdeos. This is a small but beautiful NAC and block headquarter of surrounding villages as if it is in the center. Almost at its western periphery is a moderate size village ‘Sunari Sikuan’ that literarily means where goldsmiths reside happily.

One gentleman Mr Pradip Kumar Baitharu was a good leader and Sarpanch of Sunari Sikuan grampanchayat. He had a habit of raising his village issues at different forums. That is a distant village from Khariar on the road to another block head quarter Sinapali famous for gems stone.

I went there on 11th December 1994 to do a health camp in ADAPT scheme that was still continuing remembered as Rajiv Gandhi’s Kalahandi development scheme. The date is remembered for two reasons as I had planned to go to Raipur to purchase my highly needed first bike on 12th December which is an important day in the calendar for me. The camp was finished in time and we were about to return when Mr Baitharu raised an issue of creating a Sub center where health workers are posted. I supported his view and told him that I am a small man and the sub center creation was a govt level decision. Political pressure and commitment was required, and the memorandum should be placed at proper forum. By mistake! He felt hurt as my version had another meaning that I am telling him a weak politician. He executed his capability immediately and gheraoed my vehicle.
I told my Raipur plan that was of no effect to him. I told him to send the memorandum to higher authority with no result. I requested him to send the message that they are blocking the vehicle. He was adamant that let them come automatically not getting us in time. Our team had not taken lunch were hungry. They supplied blasted rice (mudhi) and assured that they are going to cook our lunch. They were friendly. Their whole purpose was to make their demand loud enough to be heard by the authority. We were hungry and enjoyed the snacks but denied to take lunch if they are preparing.
We had nothing to do other than passing time in boredom. On that road a government homeopath, Dr Banambara Parida could note our condition as he was moving on towards Gandabahali his work place on the way to Sinapali. He came to us and told that if he returned back the mob might be suspicious for which it was better to go to Sinapali Police station to do a VHF message to Sukinda (mobile phone facility did not arrive till that period). This worked and after about two hours a team of police with our best possible Medical Officer In Charge very senior, Dr Ambarish Pradhan arrived. He was unusually sober on that day. Accepted the memorandum and morally supported their demand, assured to ensure a higher level discussion. I felt the mob also were too bored by that time and pretended that they believe something good would happen!
We returned thanking for their hospitality and my bike proposal next day was cancelled.
Unpredictable things happen and many a time one invites it like I did on that day.

The village is remembered for a second event too that is relevant to my professional philosophy.
I was with our Medical Officer Dr Ambarish Pradhan who went for inspection of health activities and I did a mobile health camp. We were planning our lunch there that was a simple vegetarian meal not of much taxing to the people who arranged the camp. Rice, dal and a curry was on menu.
On the same day Khariar police was investigating a petty crime in the village, a good feast was arranged for them and it was a simple guess to know who arranged the feast and what was on menu.
Police medical relation usually remained very good and the police party was always dealt with us in a manner as if it was their duty to see our comfort. So they for courtesy sake invited our party to their lunch.
It was a small thing but with obvious discomfort as we were unexpected and not solicited by the original hosts. So somehow we politely denied joining. It was not to the comfort of the police team too.
My officer asked my opinion on the issue.
Sir! The society divides the government servants into two categories, the ruler group and the servant group. The police department, the revenue department, forest department, the administrative people are considered rulers where as employees related to health, agriculture, veterinary, postal, education and similar category are considered as servants like barbers and laundry workers.
That I never meant to say some department was good or bad. I just told people’s perception. They did a grand feast for police out of fear and a small one for us out of love.
This statement was nothing to do with our or their degradation. When the society degrades people of all departments degrade in equal scale. Being a teacher never makes a person honest or being a contractor never makes a man dishonest. Reverse may be true, varies from person to person.
I added, but sir, we have a special love for the hair dresser or the dhobi. So with all hackling and consumer cases too people keep us in this special category of people with love. I was very comfortable to analyze in this way which after two decades is still valid for me. It is a blessing to be a health professional where you are expected to be a demigod and that is the biggest problem too.
(We had excellent rapport with the police and I beg excuse as I feel this article mention the other department as beneficiaries of public expenditure.)
So as a doctor one is treated as a more qualified servant only. One should accept it. To some it is difficult of course.

That is not all about the village. This article is dedicated to Mr Baitharu who must be of my age.

Trekking to an altitude of 15730 feet, with a group, at 49 I was the oldest. The mighty Himalayas is so beautiful that changes its hue with changing altitude. Roopkund in May is a frozen lake, a crater surrounded by mountains. This in September is in water form loaded with about 600 skeletons. The mystery is now solved (see google search). The picture below shows two ice peaks, left one is Mata Nandadevi and right one is still untrekkable Trishul.

At the height of 13-14000 feet on the meadows with the grass flower.
Mythology meets reality in this route will be
blogged later. On the right are my two friends Dr Santosh Dora a cardiologist working at Asian hearts Mumbai and Dr Rohit Nayak an eminent Neurosurgeon in Hyderabad. Below is a click at the camp site at Bhagwabasa on total ice. Here they are collecting ice to melt to use as water. Tents are also visible. The yellow one was our tent.

On right my two friends are in my tent. Below is natural grass flowers.

Right side is the roof of the tent from inside. Below is Mr Birendra with his pet Kallu at the meadows of Allibugyal, His ancestors Lathudebata guided Nandadevi towards her abode in the peak of Nandadevi. The visible portion is called Nandagunthi/ or Nandagundi meaning the Pallu (veil) of Mataji. See the yellow grass flowers.
Bellow is my trekking stick on my shadow. This is just a preliminary statement, detail will be blogged later.
Overwhelmed to feel my smallness inside the Great Himalayas and its still greater philosophy. A beautiful chance to burn one`s ego where a common man like Birenderji or Dhansingh is to be obeyed as they give lifesaving disciplinary support. Thanks to Indiahikes Mr Sidharth the 6 feet 4 inches tall expert trek leader with a huge understanding personality. Thanks to all the support staff and technical experts. Our group was a nice one with 23 members from north, south, east and west, all helped each other and hopefully I did not hurt anyone.
A life time experience and beautiful way to have a get together with old friends after 23 years.
Extremely thankful to parents, wife, children, and the extended family who remained in stressful situation for several days with the backdrop of the serial tragedies in Nepal.

Translation literature. Crocodile`s Lady or Mrs Crocodile? This is the side effect of being great; one cannot look down and react to the darts thrown at him.

Translation literature. Crocodile`s Lady or Mrs Crocodile?

This is the side effect of being great; one cannot look down and react to the darts thrown at him.

An English story written by Sri Manoj Das is translated in the same language by a team of three translators without the knowledge of the living legend. Placed in E-magzine  and its editor said a story can be translated hundred times!! Knowing the fact beforehand the editor didn`t put a foot note even if he was requested saying this is not their policy.  Can it be without permission? I am not an editor and do not know the policies of editors. Posting this for my knowledge and your discussion.

We are in a nation where translation literature is read more often than original. What I want to point out that the most read literature in India obviously are Ramayana and Mahabharata and mostly not that of Valmiki or Vyasadeva but by the regional translators. So never we can ignore such literature. Moreover only excellent works catch the imagination of translators. In other words translational works are selective masterpieces.

With all these thinking on such literature, personally I do not read them. I have a false or true belief that translators may not be catching the original ideas of the real author. Beyond the two epics (which everybody reads directly or listens from too many sources) I have read only two translated books. One is ‘Lajja’ that Late Smt Nandini Satapathy translated from Taslima Nasrin’s Bengali book with the same title and the second book is the famous ‘Chitralekha’.

To translate a great work one need to be a Tulasi Das or a Sarala Das sages themselves. Their creations are as eternal as the original creation of Sage Valmiki or Vyasadeva.
I definitely must be losing many things not reading Saratchandra or Premchand but I am illiterate in Bengali or Hindi. When a friend once gave me one Odia translation of Saratchandra I told him my reservations.

When a bilingual writer like Sri Manoj Das writes in one language and rewrites it in the second language that is altogether a different matter. People are telling it as trans-creation. In those days he must be with several inspirational pieces ready at any point of time and if an Odia editor demanded one he wrote in Odia and if suppose he had to send one to an English magazine then obviously in English. Later on it was trans-created in the other language.

I beg excuse to opine about such a great person. My above statement is based on reading his several interviews.

Now comes the present problem about the translation of a Manoj Das story that was written in English and was published in ‘The Illustrated weekly’ in 1972 with the title ‘Crocodile's lady’. The story is also published by Penguin in first volume of selected best stories compiled by Late Sri Khuswant Singh. Needless to say the beauty of the story that is as beautiful as his other creations. He trans-created it to ‘KIMBHIRINI’ which was placed in his Odia  story collection ‘Laxmira abhisara’. Now a team of three translated it to English as per their statement from Odia story and an editor published it in his E Magazine, ‘’.

The intention of the editor was genuine as he contacted close aid of Sri Manoj Das, who is Mr Samir Ranjan Das to beg some photos of the legend to be used in the magazine with the story.

He was made aware of the fact that an original English story exists to which the editor took time to decide. He decided to go as per his plan to publish the new translation with a message that a story can be translated hundred times. He then was requested by the administrator of the biggest group of followers of Manoj Das (Samirbabu) to write a footnote that the original author had written the same story himself with the title ‘Crocodile’s lady’.

Mr Editor took time and replied,”This is not our policy”.

The issue died then and there and forgotten till one English language expert Mr Brahmanada Satpathy purchased the E- Magazine to reread the story which he had read earlier. He got shocked to see this is with a different title and lacking the original sublime presentation. He posted his feeling in the Manoj Das followers’ forum.

As regards to the new translation, three authors have jointly translated the story.

-No permission was asked for.
- Can a piece of short story be translated by three persons jointly, whatever great it may be? This speaks the value of the story that the three translators honored without taking the permission of the original octogenarian author who now also is very active.
- How three persons do a short story translation? When I re-read the stories of Sri Manoj Das every time newer meanings/understanding/feeling/ and pleasure is derived as these are not written at a level of a formula which people like us do during a creation. It is through and through under guidance/companion of inspiration that any reader feels when one travels through his creations.
Did they translate it as a thesis is done for a higher study? A student writes the thesis as per his/her research that is checked by the junior faculty and finally is approved by the professor.
-Can a creation be translated in the same language? How can this group tell that they translated from the Odia story not did the caricature of the original English story.
- I myself though an ordinary writer do write in both  Odia and English. Can I copy all his Odia stories and tell I translated these from English and copy all his English stories and tell I translated these from Odia? Without obtaining his permission I can start a business of E-world of Maonj Das translation works. See! The google will help me as any one clicks Manoj Das gets an entry to my world of caricatures and it will be a business.
- Translators obviously are very good readers and they need to be good researchers. In this case how these three authors could not know that the story was first written in English way back in 1972.

Now by God`s grace he is a living legend and to sue these persons on his part may not be going to happen. He may not bother as he knows this happened earlier too. He is far above this discussion. But story does not end there. How a person like Mr Brahmananda Satapathy or you or me will be protected from being cheated? His time and money got lost with a negative feeling. Can he not book these persons under section 420 IPC?

This being an E-magazine Mr editor now also can add a small footnote that is justified in this situation.

This is the side effect of being great; one cannot look down and react to the darts thrown at him just like a tree loaded with fruits bears the stones thrown at it.

I have read one of his speeches published as an article that he delivered in an occasion/seminar on translation literature where he stated in lighter note which I cannot quote in exact words, which goes like this, “Let the translators translate a creation in such an intense way that the reader feels, the original is a poor replica of the translation”.
Once again I want to clarify that the above statement is based on my understanding and my memory.

Let us hope this is one such piece, but Mr Satapathy felt otherwise.

Rita is no more! Dt.19.04.2015 , a short story.

Rita is no more! Dt.19.04.2015.

He went as a guest speaker from India to the international conference on molecular physics in 2002. He was Ramachandra the youngest to be a professor in Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi. He was very excited about this assignment at New York with little knowledge that ‘the future decides the present’. The future can be so different!
First to his surprise was to meet Raghu Das after fifteen years. Raghu was a year senior to him at Kharagpur IIT where both of them graduated. Raghu never wanted to move abroad and settle in USA. Destiny or compulsion or anything else brought Raghu to this place to hide himself permanently. He used US as a garbage basket after he was accused of poisoning his wife with heavy dose of antipsychotic drugs. He otherwise had no escape from the strong Indian law against domestic violence, dowry torture and attempt to murder a woman. There was every possibility his wife might not recover from coma. He somehow managed to get a visa and God only knows how it was possible.

Seeing Raghu there all the details flashed back to Ramachandra`s mind. He felt as if he can not tolerate his presence. He forgot his purpose and could not calm his inner soul. How can he?

Raghu however was very cordial and did try to make the atmosphere at peace. He introduced Ramachandra to his present wife Liza and to his two daughters also invited him to his house. Asked about his family and was surprised to know Rama still was a bachelor.

Rama`s talk was on the next day. He had to chair some sessions in each day. Rama in a confused state wanted to return back but could not know how to plan it.

Raghu`s first wife Rita Das was not an ordinary less educated Indian girl. Raghu`s family was a prosperous family in Bhubaneswar. Rita was the daughter of a very reputed family in Rourkela. She was born on Ramnavami in 1968 on the very same day Ramachandra was born in the same IGH hospital of SAIL. The two families stayed in front to front houses in sector eight. They grew up together, read in the same school. Their parents being of very higher ranks in SAIL were close to each other. in Other families near by were of lower ranks. Ramachandra had another brother Akshaya. Rita was the only child to his parents. They did not get another baby even if they wished one son. No consultation or treatment was helpful. Whenever Rita asked for a brother she was told, “Are they not your brothers, Rama and Akshi?”

"No no Akshi can be my brother Rama is a friend only, a classmate can not be a brother. Rita always replied like this".

"Yes he can be. He is a twin born on same day."

"No papa he is not my brother, he is my friend". Rita replied.

Her grandfather chided,”How a boy can be your friend, you are a girl?”

"Grandpa you are old you don`t know he is not my friend he is my boyfriend," replied the innocent kid.

Everybody laughed. This did not change her version till she was thirteen years old when suddenly she felt discomfort to address him as boyfriend. Rama remained a kid for two more painful years to understand why the girl`s behavior suddenly changed towards him. There proximity being classmates sharing notes, doing discussion, sharing study related information, competing to perform better than each other did never come on their way to be less friendly. Rita was only an hour elder than Rama but she behaved like an elder sister.  She commanded him in all matters. Rama did never mind it. They were no more comfortable when other friends commented them as boyfriend or girlfriend. Rama somewhere secretly felt for it and never could express it throughout his adolescence.

Time passed as it always does. They were in IIT kharagpur. Suddenly roles reversed and Rama was expected to behave as a bonsai guardian to Rita. It was expected from him to be her protector, companion, marketing boy and everything. Rama did not mind it, rather felt elevated.

Rama shared the same room with his senior Raghu in the twin bedded room in the hostel.

Handsome Raghu had all attributes to attract girls because of his many extracurricular activities in addition to his high standard of academics. His only problem, he was aware of it and over tried using it. No girl could be a friend of him for a period more than six months. In IITs by that time also the eve’s population was too low and Raghu almost tried and failed with all. That made Raghu prominent as a failure in keeping a relationship. Being Rama`s senior roommate and very helping to him he never could speak ill of Raghu even in front of Rita. However he guessed a day may come Raghu would propose Rita when the selfish and self centered room mate once told that a lucky guy is going to get Rita. He analysed in a very mean way that Rita having no brother and plenty of parental wealth was a fortune to his husband.

Ramacahandra became restless. He felt to ventilate this to Rita but hesitated as she may mistake it. He had self doubt. Was he not panicked? Did he love her? What was his main intention, to warn or to distract her? Was it not premature before a real such thing was initiated by Raghu? Many questions came to his mind that prevented him to gossip against Raghu.

He also felt; it would not be easy to face Raghu when he eventually asked about Rita`s relationship to himself. What actually he did feel for her? No, nothing!

Once he became sure about it he gathered the courage to think why not? There must be something in her mind which she was unable to tell being such a sober girl. Even if there was nothing there was no wrong to propose which he felt was the most appropriate at that moment to block her being approached by a crook.

With no exaggeration Ramachandra proposed Rita on the very next day with clear voice that he wanted to make her his life partner and it was not a joke.

Rita didn`t take it as a joke remained silent for about an hour in a garden lawn, choosen for this special purpose.  Not only Rita but the whole atmosphere became silent. The breeze stopped, with it the tiny plants to the big trees all stopped moving to and fro. The movement of people stopped, the couples stopped romancing, the ice cream vendors and the thella owners were looking each other with a complaint of not being consulted and no such proposal should be thrown without offering an icecream first. The lightman forgot to switch on the lights in time and dusk landed early. Rama felt the wait was not for moments bot for years.

Rita answered with a question,”Do you really love me and feel me as your girl friend?”
Another half an hour passed.

“No not at all” replied Rama. “Our relationship is more than any confined sense, but that does not make my proposal with lack of sincerity, after all we are adults and we are going to settle with someone in near future and you know your parents believe they would get a son after your marriage.”

“That may be a bogus idea but my parents are still hopeful for which they didn't opt for IVF as offered by the treating physician and prepared to do it after my marriage.”

“You must be happy Rita, they did not arrange your marriage at the age of sixteen as people with this type superstitions usually do.”

Once again they preferred silence and finally Rita told, “Thanks for daring to propose me but ‘boy’ I always felt you as a real brother, I can never accept you as anything other than a younger brother.”
She brought his head closer and without any consciousness to the surrounding kissed his forehead that put a big full stop to Rama`s proposal. With this the park lights were switched on, the vendors went to business and sky above was with a beautiful star studded full moon that the artificial light dared not to fade its magnificence.

Rama now had no other option to stop Raghu entering Rita`s life which he eventually did.

With obvious but different reasons both side parents took special interest to arrange their marriage once Raghu finished his graduation and Rita had another year. Rita was only twenty by that time. Raghu`s age however was twenty four as he entered IIT after wasting three years.

Initially there was no problem and nothing was expected from Rita`s family with a hope that everything is going to be attached to their family in future. The house at Rourkela, the duplex at Bhubaneswar, the vast ancestral property in their village and everything was for the only child Rita.
Rita`s mother was forty years old and they confidentially did the IVF at the best available center in Singapore and the Baba got the undue credit of his prediction coming true. After waiting some months they spilled the bin when there was no chance to hide it any more.

Rita`s honeymoon turned nightmare thereafter. Suggestive taunts increased day by day. They could have done this or that, could have got so much wealth as dowry. Beautiful girls were making bee lines. Housewife was the best for a family. He could have gone to USA and so on. She had no importance being an IIT educated girl as she preferred a teaching job in a private Btech college thinking to settle at Bhubaneswar. The college however gave her due importance and showed her name prominently on the board with IIT tag. Raghu entered MBA study.

When Rita started feeling hurt and tried to ask Raghu to come to her rescue the man turned a deaf ear. He added salt to the wound, “What wrong were they telling?”

Things worsened as Rita`s parents were blessed with a son, Rita`s third brother after Rama and Akshi

He started beating her. Rita being an educated lady from an aristocratic family could not accept it neither he had any intention to tell her parents about the matter as they may be very upset for planning a second child.
The situation was very complicated. She went to depression and behaved abnormal. She could not sleep; idea of suicide always came to her mind. The matter went to the extent that she had to lose her job. When she consulted a psychiatrist the thing was further complicated. What drug can cure one`s depression when the triggering factor increased day by day. No psychiatric treatment is possible without family support. Rita was able to judge her problem and she at last wanted to talk to Rama the one who never can betray her.

Rama on receiving the call from his Mtech study at IIT Delhi rushed back to Odisha and immediately went to meet her in the most hostile environment. He was greeted with very filthy language with character assassination. He warned Raghu about the law of the land. Raghu was more abusive. The police turned a deaf ear and rather advised Rama not to interfere in the private matter of a respected family.

Raghu felt helpless and went to Rourkela to discuss the matter.

Rita`s parents felt that the ground below was giving away space to engulf them. Rama`s parents were very upset. They had one known close relation in home department who was immediately contacted and they promptly came forward to help.

It was too late and Rita was already in the ICU. The matter was painted as a case of attempt to suicide by taking toxic amount of antipsychotic drugs.

Raghu was never seen there after.

She was flown to New Delhi AIIMS.Eventually she survived and was discharged. She no more was Rita who once denied Rama`s proposal with a never before and never to happen in future novel way of kissing the proposer`s forehead. She was an infant to be taken care and care at a place very close to the best hospitals.

There was no other way other than keeping her with Ramachandra. Rama`s parents were equally with tear and it was too difficult to value those meaningful liquid humanity.

Years passed she remained as a vegetable. Akshaya got married. Parents of Rita and those of Ramachandra valued humanity above any other thing. It was felt absolutely normal that Rama stayed there at Delhi taking care of Rita for ever. Once retired his parents shifted to Delhi and stayed there to help him.

Rita`s parents with their young son and with Akshaya and his wife are staying together at Rourkela as Akshaya is an employee there.

Meanwhile Ramachandra excelled in his research and his papers were published in different journals at regular intervals. However he never could move out of Delhi.
His new paper he believed was of merit and it would be injustice to decline the invitation.

He prayed Rita to take food from the hands of his parents, he also called Rita`s parents for a temporary visit to Delhi. Rita nodded affirmative. When she said anything as yes she will try to bring Ramachandra`s head closer and kiss on his forehead. The scene always brought his parents to tear and Ramachandra or anyone else never had the capacity to describe that tear, ‘inexpressible’.

So finally Ramachandra left Rita and she smiled and kissed him. That smile was meaningful Ramachandra even at this difficult moment to bid farewell to his heavenly duties towards a girl, towards humanity, towards brotherhood, towards his childhood girlfriend, as a mother taking care of a woman kid and towards his once upon a time proposed bride, could sense she was improving and time is not far when she can serve a cup of tea to him.

He was completely absorbed with all these flashbacks when Raghu made him remember the time to chair a session. He was at pain to do the job. He wanted to lodge a complaint to the strong policing of that land. He wanted to know how Raghu could evade the multilayered security system to get the entry to this land of justice. He seriously felt there was a breech in the wall which if exposed would be helpful to US authority too. He could not finalise his next course of action.

Suddenly his cell in silent mode blinked not once but several times from his land line at Delhi, from his father`s mobile, from the number of Rita`s father and at last from her number. It was not possible to pick it up. A message came in; a video was sent with Rita having epilepsy for last ten minutes without break. They were taking her in an ambulance.

Oh my God probably she was not given tabs of epsolin, valparin and clonazepam in right dose. May be they skipped any of them or all of them. Rita had not suffered from epilepsy for the last one year.  He was undone, could not do anything other than holding the arms of his chair with very tight grip. He prayed God and hoped she should reach in time to get life saving care.

After half an hour message from his father`s mobile, “Rita could not be saved”.

Rama was no more a Rama he picked up the metallic flower vase and with his all effort smashed it on the forehead of Raghu exactly on the same spot where Rita must have done many things in past.

He was instantly arrested. Raghu was rushed to the hospital.

He pressed everything to the jury. He is now in New York jail with a five years rigorous imprisonment as a convict of attempt to murder.

His notes were taken seriously and a detailed inquiry was done in cooperation of authorities of both the nations. Seven of the persons were charged for their role to bring in a criminal of a friendly nation to the land of justice.

Raghu was expatriated as his crime was done in India which now was converted to a case of murder. He can never escape as the case turned to be a very high profile crime discussed in several countries.

Rama is not very much unhappy with the turn of the events and his research work is well continuing in a calm and quiet environment created inside the USA jail.

Raghu is inside Tihar. (Report as on 2006)
