When a shared auto rickshaw leaves stand with seats vacant, you feel lucky. He gossips philosophy not to waste fuel, not to overload. "I can't give a coin to anyone, is there any right to drive in an accident prone manner that costs a human life of a lakh." My smile converts to noisy laughter. He demands an explanation. Yeah dear, you amuse me over the price of human. Nano car's cost is no more a promised one lakh, it almost doubled but we by habit say human life is a lakh only. He agrees and disagrees. "Sure, it should be more but how much the govt costs it? Do you know the compensation for lightening, or snake bite or heat stroke death?"
Amazing Auto owner. I keep quiet being a doctor who should actually know these values.
He quotes too low prices which I have no way to disagree. I take the discussion to another direction. You are right. You leave two passengers for the next auto and these back log of two continues for rest all of them. So you help all your fellow men. As you know the costumer number in a particular route is bound to be divided by the number of rickshaws and hence if a time of stay in the stand is fixed there is no loss and as you rightly say, fuel is saved. He nodded. He got inspired to highlight his goodness. It is not boring because most people run to uphold their goodness, may he be a man of very high position or a student of standard one. It is more encouraging that on the way his vehicle is packed to the capacity so that his revenue is not lost. Unknowingly a sense of guilt evaporates but the feel of obligation still remains there, settles at the bottom.
We reach at Ranihat and turn towards Mangalabag. A young girl busy with a smartphone comes from the opposite direction. She is lost with her set. However reflexly she keeps to the edge of the road about a foot away from the auto. The driver to my horror moves closer to the girl. Of course he does not intend to dash with her. The girl utters, oh sorry. Her engagement with phone makes her unaware that fault is with the driver. The driver says, how these girls are so busy and unable to see their own safety. A passenger agrees to him. I smile acknowledging their surge of androgen but it converts to a grimace, lucky it is not noticed. But the bottom line may be, who can give guarantee that I do not get illusion in support of the little woman because I too belong to males.
